Where the Water Ends Up
Three of the calls we get most often here have the same shape: the gutter is fine, the water just isn't going where it's supposed to. Downspout water has to be carried well clear of the foundation, it can't cross a walkway serving the house, and it can't discharge onto the property next door.
- Water against the foundation. Aurora's ground freezes deep and moves when it does, so a downspout emptying at the wall puts every gallon into ground already working against the house. An extension or splash block carries it past that zone; a short one doesn't do much on a long elevation.
- Water across the front walk. A nuisance in October, a hazard in January, and not allowed either way. The fix is usually moving the outlet and re-routing the pipe.
- The neighbor's downspout. Aurora's narrow side yards mean a pipe pointed the short way often lands water in the next yard, rather than anything deliberate. We'll say plainly whether the fix sits on your side of the line or theirs.
- Winter makes it worse. Standing water freezes, expands the joints, and pulls hangers out of the board a little at a time, so a run fine in September can be hanging low by March. We sequence fixes so what matters before the first hard freeze happens first.

How far does my downspout have to carry water away from the house in Aurora?
Well clear of the foundation, using an extension or a splash block rather than letting it drop at the wall. The point is to get the water past the ground that sits against the house. Then it soaks away somewhere harmless.
Why does my gutter only overflow in one spot?
Usually because that's where the water arrives fastest, or where the fall is wrong and it pools. One corner overflowing while the rest behaves points to a specific fault, not a system that's too small.
Can a dented gutter be repaired or does it have to be replaced?
It depends how far the dent has gone. A shallow mark on the face is cosmetic. A dent that's changed the shape of the trough changes how the water runs. What decides whether a run can be saved is worth knowing first.
Will insurance cover hail-damaged gutters?
Often yes. Gutters dent visibly while shingles show almost nothing, so they're often the first evidence on the house. How a hail claim gets documented decides how much gets covered.
Should I get the gutters fixed before winter?
Yes, if water is sitting in them now. Standing water becomes ice, ice becomes weight, and weight is what turns a small resealing job into a re-hang.
Do you clean gutters out?
Not as a job on its own. Where clearing happens is alongside the rest of the work. When there's roofing going on, our roofers clear them as part of that work. On a repair visit, a blocked run is sometimes the whole problem. When it is, clearing it counts as part of the fix, and we'll tell you plainly that's all it was.
Do I need a whole new system, or is this a repair?
Usually a repair. Most of what we get called to is one section, one joint or one downspout doing the wrong thing. It's worth knowing what a system that has genuinely reached the end looks like, so you can tell the difference.
