Who Comes Out to Your House
Everyone we send into your home has been background checked. It counts for more on this call than on any other. An emergency means letting somebody into your house at night. We carry general liability and workers compensation insurance, so that risk sits with us rather than with you. Colorado also limits what a roofer can take from you up front. Any deposit is held until the materials show up or most of the work is done.
Some of our salespeople speak Spanish, if that makes things easier at the door. Call outside normal hours and you get someone who can help, not a message taken for later. What Counts as a Roofing Emergency
It is an emergency if water is getting into the house now. Or if the roof is open to the sky. Or if anything is sagging or sitting near electrics. Most other things are a job we book in during business hours.

- A limb or heavy debris is resting on the roof.

- Anything structural: a sag, a soft spot, or daylight showing in the attic.

What to Do Before We Get There
While you are waiting, there is real work you can do.
- Move what you can out from under it. Furniture, electronics, rugs, anything sitting on the floor.
- Catch the water. A bucket, a bin, a plastic sheet. Change it before it overflows and you are mopping twice.
- If water is near a light fitting or an outlet, turn that circuit off at the panel. Water and electricity is the part of this that actually hurts people.
- If a ceiling is bulging and holding water, put a container under it. Then make one small hole at the low point. It drains in one place instead of coming down all at once. That feels wrong. It is the right call.
- Photograph everything, and photograph it now. The room, the ceiling, the water, and whatever you can see from the ground outside. Photographs from tonight are worth more than photographs from next week.
- Stay off the roof. All of it. In the dark, in rain, in snow, in wind, or on a hail-damaged surface.
A wet or damaged roof is how people get seriously hurt. On top of that, a homeowner walking a hail-damaged roof can leave marks. Those marks get claims denied as mechanical damage rather than storm damage. Both of those are real.
How Tarping a Roof Works
A tarp holds the weather off while the rest gets sorted out. The most common question we get is whether you can just nail one down. Nails driven through good shingles are new holes, and they leak once the tarp comes off, so a tarp gets held down without putting holes in the parts of the roof still doing their job.
- What gets anchored: the edges and the ridge, where wind gets underneath.
- What gets weighted or battened: the field of the tarp, using boards and weight rather than fasteners.
- Where fasteners do go in: the area that is being replaced anyway. Those holes come off with the old roof.
A tarp buys time. It is not a roof and it is not a season. Sun, wind and snow load all work on it, and the wind here is particularly hard on tarps. A badly fitted one becomes a sail, and when it goes it takes shingles with it.
Stopping the water tonight is not the repair, and the two are priced separately for that reason. Stabilization stops the loss getting bigger. The repair fixes whatever failed. Work fitted in outside a normal schedule costs more across every trade, and roofing is no different. Colorado's insurance regulator tells homeowners to stop further damage after a storm by tarping roofs and boarding up windows, so emergency work is generally what your policy expects of you rather than an upsell. The cost of it is often a separate line on the claim. What yours covers is a question for your policy and your agent.

Is a leaking roof an emergency?
Sometimes. Water in the living space, water near electrics, a sagging ceiling. Or a roof open to the sky. All of those are tonight. A contained drip with clear weather forecast isn't. Call and describe it, outside normal hours included. We'll tell you which one you have rather than leaving you to guess.
Who do I call for an emergency roof leak?
A roofer, and one with an address you can actually find. The state's own advice after a storm is to be careful with anyone who turns up unannounced. And to work with Colorado-based contractors. That advice matters most at night, when it's tempting to go with whoever answers first. Call us outside normal hours and a person takes the call. They'll work out with you how serious it is, and come out if it's genuinely an emergency.
Are roof leaks covered by insurance?
It depends on what caused it and on your policy. Storm damage is usually a claim. Wear and age usually aren't, because policies cover sudden damage rather than a roof wearing out. Your own agent can tell you what yours does.
Will insurance pay for the tarping?
Often it appears as a separate line on the claim. Stopping further damage is what your insurer wants you to do. It's worth asking your carrier directly. Keep the paperwork and the photographs from the night, because that's what supports it.
Why is my roof still leaking after it was repaired?
Usually because the water is getting in somewhere other than where the stain is. A patch put in the obvious place fixes a spot that was never the problem. The full answer is a daylight conversation with us in the attic and on the roof.
Is a windy night an emergency if nothing is leaking?
It can be. If the deck is open or shingles are gone and more weather is coming, the damage is done. The water is just waiting. Cold-season wind here does exactly that, and the leak often doesn't appear until the next snowmelt. The trade has a name for wind damage that runs along a whole row of shingles, and it's worth a look after a windy night.
