The damage happened in the summer. Can it wait until spring?
Preferably not. Water that got in behind a cracked panel in August sits there all winter, freezes and expands. What was a panel problem in September can be a wall problem by April.
Can I just paint over it?
Sometimes. On a wall that's faded or chalky and otherwise sound, paint is a real answer. On cracked, punctured or chipped panels, sometimes paint will not fix it. The damage is through the material rather than on it.
